The second Bridges to the Future event of the 2010–11 series, “9/11: Ten Years After,” will feature Fawaz Gerges, an expert on the Middle East.
Gerges, professor of international relations of the Middle East and political science at the London School of Economics, will speak at 7 p.m. Jan. 10 at DU’s Newman Center for the Performing Arts. His talk is called “Broken Middle East: A Wasted Decade on the War on Terror?”
Gerges is the author of two recently acclaimed books: Journey of the Jihadist: Inside Muslim Militancy (Harcourt Press, 2007) and The Far Enemy: Why Jihad Went Global (Cambridge University Press, 2005).
His special interests include Islam and the political process, social movements including mainstream Islamist movements and jihadist groups such as the Muslim Brotherhood and al-Qaida. He also studies Arab politics and Muslim politics in the 20th century, the international relations of the Middle East, the Arab-Israeli conflict and modern history of the Middle East.
Bridges to the Future was created in 2002 to build a framework of programs that stimulate civic dialog and discussion among Colorado communities. Events are scheduled in three of DU’s academic quarters: fall, winter and spring.
