Research and performance summit features graduate student work

Graduate students from nearly every department on campus — from emergent digital practices and art history to economics and anthropology — will share their work Feb. 7 at the University of Denver’s first Graduate Research and Performance Summit. Titled “Breaking Down the Silos,” the event is hosted by the University’s Graduate Student Government (GSG) and organized by GSG president and communication studies doctoral candidate Leslie Rossman. The summit will focus on cross-disciplinary research and the interdisciplinary opportunities that arise at graduate-level student research.

“The idea for the event came about from the need to foster dialogue within DU’s graduate community. The summit gives students from across DU’s disciplines the opportunity to exhibit their work to the whole campus community,” Rossman says.

All graduate and doctoral students were invited to submit their work for inclusion in the summit, and more than 50 projects will be featured during the daylong event. The day features multiple panels in three sessions — morning, midmorning and afternoon — followed by a networking reception at 4:15 p.m. Each panel features four to six students presenting their work on topics including social justice, contemporary issues, public good and global perspectives. Among the presenters are anthropology student Halena Kapuni-Reynolds, speaking on “Reawakening the voices of the ancestors through Historical Hawaiian Language Newspaper Scholarship”; Tara Rhodes, of research methods and statistics, on “Aiding or Abating: Electoral Fraud Through a Lens of Social Justice”; and jazz studies student Wang Si on “Hidden Gems – Betty Carter and her music.”

A full schedule, including abstracts by each presenter, is available on the summit’s Portfolio site. “This summit complements the mission of the Graduate Student Government: fostering inclusivity within interdisciplinary research and dialogue among the DU community,” Rossman says.
