After a months-long search that included internal and external candidates, Daniel McIntosh, a professor in the University of Denver’s Department of Psychology, has been named dean of DU’s Divisions of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences. McIntosh’s appointment is effective July 1, 2014. Interim Dean Rob Roberts will return to the psychology department.

After completing his PhD at the University of Michigan, McIntosh joined the psychology department in 1992 as an assistant professor. He earned tenure in 1999 and was promoted to associate professor, a position he held until he was promoted to full professor in 2007.

“I am thrilled and honored to be chosen for this position,” McIntosh says. “The AHSS community embraces world-class scholars and artists collaborating with students in innovative and engaged education. I look forward to working with the students, faculty, staff, alumni and friends of AHSS in moving our departments, programs and the University forward during this exciting time in higher education.”

Between 2008 and 2012, McIntosh served as director of the University’s Honors Program. In 2012, his psychology colleagues elected him chair of the department. He was named the William T. Driscoll Master Educator in 2004 and the United Methodist Church University Scholar/Teacher of the Year in 2008.

McIntosh’s research areas within the field of psychology include emotions, coping and the psychology of religion. He has published more than 70 scholarly articles and chapters and has received 13 different research grants from extramural funding sources including the National Science Foundation. For his work in the area of inclusive excellence, Danny received the Outstanding Faculty Member Award from the Center for Multicultural Excellence in 2009.

“This is an astonishing record of accomplishment in all of the areas that constitute the lives of faculty members at the University of Denver,” Chancellor Robert Coombe and Provost Gregg Kvistad wrote in a letter to the DU community. “It prepares Danny very well to assume the deanship of the Divisions of Arts, Humanities & Social Sciences at this time. As we know, higher education generally, and the liberal arts particularly, face enormous challenges and opportunities in the next five years. Danny’s achievements at the University, and the extraordinary level of trust he has among his faculty and staff colleagues, make him an excellent choice to lead this large, complex and institutionally vital academic unit at the University of Denver.”
