Former volleyball player awarded prestigious McLendon Minority Scholarship

Recently graduated University of Denver volleyball student-athlete Faimie Kingsley is one of five winners of the prestigious John McLendon Minority Postgraduate Scholarship Award, announced Friday by the National Association of Collegiate Directors of Athletics (NACDA) and the John McLendon Minority Scholarship Foundation.

Kingsley will receive a $10,000 grant to be used toward postgraduate studies in athletics administration. Kingsley graduated in the spring of 2013 with a 3.59 cumulative GPA in marketing. Kingsley is the second DU student-athlete to earn the McLendon scholarship, joining swimmer Jackie Leung, who was awarded the scholarship last season.

Kingsley was named First Team All-Conference (Sun Belt and WAC) twice and earned four Conference Player of the Week honors during her career. Academically, Kingsley was named to the SBC Commissioner’s List twice for achieving a GPA of 3.5 or higher. Most recently, Kingsley was named to the All-WAC Academic Team.

Kingsley also was an executive board member of Denver’s Student-Athlete Advisory Committee and served as a university representative for the Sun Belt Conference and Western Athletic Conference student-athlete advisory committees. Active in the community, Kingsley volunteered at the nonprofit Inspiring Young Minds for four years. The Bronx, N.Y., native plans to play volleyball overseas for a few years before attending graduate school in sports management.

“Faimie is extremely deserving of the McLendon scholarship,” says associate athletics director Cynthia Rail. “She made a tremendous impact in and outside the classroom during her time at Denver. Faimie will undoubtedly continue that trend as she pursues a career in athletic administration. We need bright, determined, passionate young leaders like her to take an active leadership role in our field, and this scholarship will definitely help her accomplish that goal.”
