University of Denver Campus Safety officers have stepped up patrols and increased visibility after a carjacking took place in a campus parking garage April 3.
A 20-year-old student told investigators she spotted two people walking in the garage near Centennial Halls about 11:20 p.m. as she pulled into a parking place. When she got out of the car, the woman said a man in a bandana displayed a handgun and ordered her to drop her keys and backpack and leave the garage.
She wasn’t hurt, and Campus Safety and Denver Police were on the scene within minutes.
The woman’s car was spotted a short time later leaving the area, and Denver Police pursued it until it crashed about six miles south of campus. Two suspects, a man and a woman, were arrested.
The University of Denver Office of Campus Safety employs more than 30 uniformed officers on patrol around the clock. Additionally, there are nearly 90 emergency phones, marked by blue lights, across campus providing immediate, direct lines to Campus Safety’s 24-hour dispatch center.
The Office of Campus Safety offers regular, free safety courses to students. The University also offers a free shuttle to and from most locations across campus until 2:30 a.m. daily. More information on Campus Safety programs is available online at www.du.edu/campus-safety.
