Carl’s Jr. on Evans shuts down the grill

The Carl’s Jr. hamburger stand at 1535 E. Evans Ave. closed Dec. 30 and is seeking a new tenant for the property, a spokesman says.

“We control the building and are exploring all our options,” said Austin Rosen, vice president of real estate and business development for By The Rockies LLC, which operates 15 other Carl’s Jr. franchises in Colorado. There are 1,245 Carl’s Jr. restaurants worldwide.

The Carl’s Jr. near DU opened in fall 2007 at the northwest corner of Franklin Street and Evans Avenue. Prior to that, the space was a Wienerschnitzel hot dog stand.

Carls’s Jr. restaurants began in 1956 in California. The stores were named Carl’s Jr. because they were smaller versions of Carl’s Drive-in Barbeque, the flagship restaurant opened by Carl Karcher in Anaheim, Calif., in 1945. The parent company, CKE Restaurants, operates 3,153 franchises and company stores in 42 states and 18 countries, including Hardee’s, Green Burrito and Red Burrito stores.
