Designing sites where memories last is topic of Marcus Lecture

James Young will be the featured speaker at the annual Fred Marcus Holocaust Memorial Lecture. The lecture is sponsored by the DU Center for Judaic Studies’ Holocaust Awareness Institute.

Young’s lecture, “The Stages of Memory in Berlin and New York,” will take place at 4 p.m. March 13 at the Infinity Park Event Center in Glendale, Colo.

Young, chair of the Judaic and Near Eastern Studies Department at the University of Massachusetts-Amherst, will speak about participating on the five-member committee for Germany’s “Memorial to Europe’s Murdered Jews” that was dedicated in Berlin in 2005.

He also served on the jury for the World Trade Center Site Memorial at Ground Zero and worked with the Argentine government on designing a memorial to that nation’s “desaparacidos” — the citizens who vanished during the 1976–83 military junta.

Young is the author of three books, including 1994 National Jewish Book Award winner The Texture of Memory (Yale University, 1993).

Following Young’s talk, there will be a panel discussion on “Memorials, Memory and Memorialization,” featuring scholars from DU, the University of Colorado and representatives from Denver’s Mizel Museum. Young also will sign books following the presentation.
