The University of Denver’s annual Diversity Summit on Inclusive Excellence is expanding from one day to three in 2013, allowing even more time for participants to learn about “Championing Equity to Inspire Change.” Running May 9–11 on campus, the 12th annual event features workshops, speakers and discussion, as well as a “Day of Action” for DU students.
“The decision to make the summit into a three-day event was an easy one,” says Stuart Portman, event co-chair. “There are so many events, conferences and speakers that happen on campus during early May. We thought that combining these events under the theme of the Diversity Summit would be a great way to incorporate more of the campus community in this DU tradition.”
This year’s theme recognizes the role of leaders as catalysts for action. Content presented at the summit will emphasize the development of leaders who understand and implement diversity and inclusion. It will cover three topical areas: access to education and success in life; equity within organizations; and application of equitable health care.
Pedro Noguera, the Peter L. Agnew professor of education at New York University, will be the keynote speaker the evening of May 9. Noguera has served as an adviser and engaged in collaborative research with several large urban school districts throughout the United States. Noguera also serves as executive director of the Metropolitan Center for Urban Education and as co-director of the Institute for the Study of Globalization and Education in Metropolitan Settings.
The summit also includes a panel discussion on how access and equity impact communities across Colorado, plus a daylong series of workshops on May 10.
On May 11, University of Denver students will host students and parents from Munroe Elementary School in northwest Denver for a campus visit. This first-ever student “Day of Action” during the Diversity Summit will feature information and activities for families to learn what a university education entails and how early preparation can improve access and success. It is being presented in partnership with DU Service and Change, a student organization devoted to volunteerism.
