To keep the seasonal flu at bay, the University is offering flu shots for faculty, staff and students.
The DU’s Department of Human Resources is once again partnering with Kaiser Permanente to offer a drop-in flu shot clinic for employees on Oct. 19 from 9 a.m.–2 p.m. on the Driscoll Student Center Bridge.
Shots are free for employees with their Kaiser card. Non-members may receive a shot for $25. Cash and checks made out the University of Denver will be accepted. Undergraduate and graduate students with a Pioneer card can also receive a free flu shot during the clinic, compliments of DU’s Health and Counseling Center.
“This is an important service to our employees,” says clinic coordinator Jane Bucher-McCoy, compensation and benefits generalist in the department of human resources. “Prevention is a big thing, and we are pleased to offer this opportunity again.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), flu activity most commonly peaks in the United States in January or February. However, seasonal flu activity can begin as early as October and continue to occur as late as May.
The CDC recommends a yearly flu vaccine as the first and most important step in protecting against the disease.
In addition to vaccination, there are many ways to avoid the flu. Sam Alexander, executive director of DU’s Health and Counseling Center, recommends that all faculty, staff and students practice preventative measures, including frequent handwashing with soap and water, the use of an alcohol-based hand rub, covering coughs and sneezes with a tissue and keeping hands away from the face.
Getting enough rest, eating well and exercising also help bolster the body’s immune system to prevent disease, he says.
