The Upsilon Gamma Chapter of Sigma Lambda Beta International Fraternity at the University of Denver hosts the first Denver screening of the new documentary “The Dream is Now” at 6:30 p.m. Wednesday in Davis Auditorium in Sturm Hall.
Directed by Davis Guggenheim (“Waiting for ‘Superman,’” “An Inconvenient Truth”), the 30-minute film follows four undocumented youth in America, focusing on their personal stories and on what the filmmakers call America’s “broken immigration system.” It’s a subject that hits close to home for members of Sigma Lambda Beta, a Latino fraternity.
“In one way or another we’ve all felt the effect of immigration and having some sort of connection to undocumented students,” says fraternity member and accountancy major Evan Romero. “I am a citizen; my parents were born here, but I grew very close throughout high school with a group of friends who actually weren’t citizens and they weren’t able to do a lot of the things that we were.”
The screening will be followed by a panel discussion featuring an undocumented DU student, two DU professors, a Denver immigration lawyer and people involved with the film.
Tickets to the free screening can be reserved in advance on Eventbrite.
