Penrose staff finds new study space for students

With Penrose Library under renovation, the demand for study space is more than Penrose@Driscoll can accommodate. That’s why Penrose staffers, including Dean Nancy Allen, went on a hunt to find study space across campus.

The resulting list is on the Penrose site, where students can search for study space based on needs such as group space or quiet study. It also lists what amenities are available such as wireless access, printing services and dining facilities.

“We are very excited and pleased with the collaboration across campus to provide spaces for study,” says Bethany Sewell, assistant professor and access services librarian.

Sewell says some departments on campus made special provisions to help out. Student Life opened up the main floor and cafeteria in Nelson and Nagel Halls for longer times to students who are not residents and the registrar found six rooms in Sturm Hall that will be used for quiet study.

“We have witnessed an increase in use of our space including not only gate count but also use of our study rooms over the years,” Sewell says. “This increase in use was one of the factors in beginning the building project and the project includes plans for increased seating, an addition of deep-quiet study areas, and more group-study rooms in a variety of sizes.”
