Pioneers to head to the hills for Winter Carnival

A lively DU tradition will break up the winter doldrums and give students a chance to celebrate the season on campus and at Winter Park Resort. DU’s annual Winter Carnival — organized by the DU Programming Board (DUPB) — will be held from Feb. 4–13.

“Winter Carnival is one of the three main traditions that DU has every year. These events are Homecoming, Winter Carnival, and May Days,” says Emily Parker, co-chair of the DUPB traditions committee. “[Participating in] Winter Carnival is a great way to show DU pride.”

Winter Carnival kicks off on Feb. 4 with the DU vs. Colorado College hockey series. On-campus activities will include free pizza from the DU Grilling Society on Tuesday afternoon and free s’mores and hot chocolate before the DUPB showing of The Social Network on Feb. 10.

On-mountain activities at Winter Park start Feb. 11. Weekend activities include s’mores and hot chocolate in the village on Friday evening, tubing at Colorado Adventure Park on Friday night and a special concert featuring DJ Shares with opener JASHKO on Saturday night.

Lift tickets are available at a reduced rate of $40 for one-day passes or $80 for two-day passes. Bus transportation to and from the resort is available for $15.

Special lodging rates are available for DU Winter Carnival attendees at the Founders Pointe and Fraser Crossing condos in the main Winter Park Village and at Winter Park Mountain Lodge.

Since DUPB funds the events with money from the undergraduate student activity fee, admission to the various events is partially underwritten for undergraduates only. DU graduate students, faculty and staff can attend at slightly higher prices.

Parker hopes there will be an overwhelming turnout for the weekend.

“The Denver Invitational for our ski team is at Winter Park during the same weekend,” she says. “We want as many DU students as possible to be able to cheer on our ski team on the slopes.”

Visit the Winter Carnival website for registration forms and additional information. The registration deadline is January 31.
