Ricks students carry umbrellas for peace

To celebrate the International Day of Peace, the students and staff at DU’s Ricks Center for Gifted Children walked throughout the University of Denver campus on Sept. 21 carrying colorful, self-decorated umbrellas to raise awareness of the value of an attitude of peace. Students in 5th-8th grade participated in a “flash mob” dance to the famous song from Fox’s Glee, “Under My Umbrella.” They also performed the dance at the Denver Art Museum to share the message with the broader community. The walk is part of a global “Umbrellas for Peace” project developed by artist Matt Lamb shortly after Sept. 11, 2001, to help individuals impacted by the tragedy. The project has grown to encompass more than 900,000 individuals in 27 countries. Photo: Wayne Armstrong
