Sexual Assault Awareness Month at DU focuses on education, support and prevention

Sexual Assault Awareness Month is nationally recognized in the U.S. Every April, college campuses across the country host events with the goal of educating university communities about sexual violence and how to prevent it.

DU’s Sexual Assault Awareness Month programming is presented by the Center for Advocacy, Prevention and Empowerment (CAPE). CAPE provides programs and resources that promote healthy relationships, teach nonviolence and equality, and foster a respectful and safe environment for all members of the University of Denver community. CAPE also supports survivor healing by providing advocacy and support for victims of sexual violence, stalking, sexual harassment and relationship violence.

The Clothesline Project

T-shirts displayed throughout the month of April at Anderson Academic Commons and Driscoll Bridge

The Clothesline Project began as a vehicle for women affected by violence to express their emotions by decorating a T-shirt. The shirt is then hung on a clothesline to be viewed by others as testimony to the problem of violence against women. Today, Clothesline Projects provide awareness about sexual and intimate partner violence, hate crimes and child abuse. Survivors and friends of survivors design and decorate T-shirts that are displayed during Sexual Assault Awareness Month.

Denim Day @ DU

Wednesday, April 15

Denim Day is an international protest responding to the Italian Supreme Court’s overruling of a rape conviction in 1999. An Italian woman was raped, and when the case went to trial, the jury found her assailant guilty. The Italian Supreme Court then overturned the ruling, saying that jeans are too difficult to remove and the assailant could not have done so without the victim’s help.

To honor Denim Day, the DU community (including friends and neighbors) is invited to wear jeans in order to promote awareness. University leaders will be around campus throughout the day, providing Denim Day pins and informational cards. Show your support on social media with #DUDenimDay.
