The Vicki Myhren Gallery on campus is hosting a campus-wide Student Art Show through May 27. University of Denver students were encouraged to submit work, regardless of major, and the exhibit features pieces from a wide range of students.

“The goal of our end-of-the-year show was to reach students beyond the walls of the Shwayder Art Building,” says Stephanie Khoury, PR director for the gallery. “We’ve always highlighted the work of BA and BFA students, but this year we also wanted students from all disciplines to be able to enter their artwork.”

Studio art majors, along with students pursuing degrees in environmental science, geography, sustainability and biology, created the artwork on display in the juried show. The 33 pieces of artwork range from paintings to sculptures to mixed-media pieces.

DU alumna Viviane Le Courtois, program and gallery manager of Downtown Aurora Visual Arts, served as juror for the exhibit. Le Courtois awarded the Juror’s Award to Oriana Edman, a freshman studying environmental science. Edman’s piece, “Made in China,” consists of fabric from old clothes and tags that she burned and sewed together on various fabric globes.

In addition to Edman, Courtois awarded three students with Honorable Mentions. Catherine Chauvin, director of DU’s School of Art and Art History, also awarded a Director’s Award to Eric Shimokawa for his series of prints inspired by the colorful style and techniques of printmaker John Hitchcock.

“I was looking for innovation,” Chauvin says. “I was looking for examples of taking a concept or something presented in a class and taking that to the next level. I think the art presented in the show does that.”

The Student Art Show is the first time the Myhren Gallery has hosted an exhibit open to all students in any field of study. The exhibit is free and open to the public. For more information, visit the gallery website.
