Summer events on campus: music, theater and more

Though there will be fewer students on campus and fewer classes in session this summer, the University of Denver will present a number of events open to students, staff, faculty and the general public.

The Newman Center for the Performing Arts hosts performances from local organizations throughout the summer, including men’s a cappella chorus Sound of the Rockies, hosting “Accapellooza 2016” — featuring a cappella groups from throughout the state — on June 19; and the Denver-based Phamaly Theatre Company, which brings its production of the musical “Evita” to the Newman Center various days July 14–Aug. 7.

The Lamont School of Music also presents a handful of concerts this summer. Recitals by guest artists, faculty and participants from the Lamont Summer Academy music camp are free and open to the public and will occur on June 25, 29 and 30. The sixth annual Carillon Summer Recital Series, also free of charge, will take place at 7 p.m. on select Sundays throughout the summer the Ritchie Center lawn. Featured performers include DU carilloneur Carol Jickling Lens (July 17) and guest artists Hunter Chase (July 3), Carolyn Bolden (July 31), Ray McLellan (Aug. 14) and Carlo Van Ulft (Aug. 28).

Additionally, the Rafael Méndez Brass Institute welcomes brass musicians and educators to the Lamont School of Music July 10–16. The institute features a number of recitals and concerts that are free and open to the public, including performances by the Denver Brass, the Denver Municipal Band, institute participants and others. In the Anderson Academic Commons, “Rising Stars: Denver Civic Ballet” is on display through Nov. 30. This exhibit explores the history and impact of the Denver Civic Ballet, Denver’s first semi-professional ballet company, and its support organization, the Denver Civic Ballet Guild.
