Top 10 of 2012: DU’s biggest news stories of the year

Thousands of students, faculty, staff and neighbors came to campus for DebateFest on Oct. 3.

The presidential debate on campus was undoubtedly the biggest the story of the year, but there was other big news at the University of Denver this year, including a new logo and a move to a new athletic conference. As voted on by the staff of the University Communications department, here are the 10 biggest stories of 2012. (Click here to see the list of the most-read stories on DU Today.)

1. The University hosts the first presidential debate of the 2012 election cycle.

2. The University unveils a new logo and branding platform.

3. Eleven Pioneer athletic teams move from the WAC to the Summit League.

4. Management Professor Gordon Von Stroh dies at 69.

5. Law students sue to block Christo’s ‘Over the River’ project.

6. Three Pioneers compete at the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

7. University makes U.S. News’ ‘Up-and-Comers’ list in best colleges issue

8. Five DU students win Fulbright scholarships.

9. ESPN2 comes to campus to broadcast a men’s basketball game.

10. Erica Chenoweth, a professor in the Josef Korbel School of International Studies, wins the 2012 Woodrow Wilson Foundation Award and the 2013 University of Louisville Grawemeyer Award for her book Why Civil Resistance Works: The Strategic Logic of Nonviolent Conflict.
