The University of Denver campus is getting a little greener in celebration of the 100th anniversary of the Daniels College of Business.
The Daniels Centennial Trees project aims to plant 100 different trees across campus by April 2009. The college is soliciting donations to cover the cost of the trees and to endow a Daniels Centennial Scholarship.
The project grew out of a desire to celebrate the college’s history, create a fund to help students in the future and to support Denver Mayor John Hickenlooper’s Tree by Tree initiative. Hickenlooper’s plan aims to plant one million trees in the Denver metropolitan area in the next 20 years.
The first campus tree — a baby blue-eyed spruce — was planted June 9 in honor of Daniels Dean Emeritus Bruce Hutton. Forty-one other trees have since been planted.
According to Campus Operation Director Dave Snyder, each tree is being marked with an arboretum inventory tag designating it as a gift of the Daniels College of Business.
Specific details about the scholarship criteria are still being worked out, but “the scholarship recipient will be someone who embodies the Daniels College spirit and commitment to ethics and values,” says Jamie Alexander, director of Annual Giving and Special Gifts for the Daniels College of Business.
The scholarship will be awarded on April 25, 2009, at an event culminating the yearlong anniversary celebration. Planned activities for the event include a five mile run/3K walk, an alumni barbecue and the planting of the 100th tree.
