1907 Geronimo portrait housed at Penrose Library

Penrose Library houses this 1907 portrait of Apache leader Geronimo, which is part of a complete set of the first edition of The North American Indian by renowned photographer Edward Curtis. In 1906, J.P. Morgan offered Curtis $75,000 to produce a 20-volume set containing 1,500 American Indian photographs. Curtis spent 24 years photographing every major tribe west of the Mississippi — more than 80 in all. Only 300 sets were produced, and in 1930 the Boettcher family purchased one for DU for $3,000.
