On Jan. 8, 1907, DU students, faculty members and friends presented this mace to DU’s third chancellor, Henry Augustus Buchtel, upon his appointment as governor of Colorado. According to a copy of a speech given that day, all of the metals and stones on the mace are from Colorado: “The head is of polished walnut. The handle is of solid silver from the mines of the Centennial State.
