Five nationally-known carillonneurs will visit the University of Denver this summer to perform on the 65-bell Williams Carillon for audiences spread out on the lawns surrounding the Daniel L. Ritchie Center for Sports and Wellness. Admission is free to all five performances.

The Carillon Summer Concert Series opens at 7 p.m. Sunday, June 30, with Princeton University Carillonneur Lisa Lonie. Her Denver program, “Bon Appétit, a Culinary Musical Journey,” includes Ronald Barnes’ “Comodamente,” Stephen Sondheim’s “Send in the Clowns” and the Sherman brothers’ “Selections from Mary Poppins.”

University of Denver Carillonneur Carol Jickling Lens performs the second concert of the summer at 7 p.m. Sunday, July 14. In addition to performing daily concerts on the Williams Carillon, Carol is coordinating the Guild of Carillonneurs in North America’s Annual Congress in the summer of 2014 to be held on the DU campus as an official event of the University’s 150th anniversary year. Carol has programmed “Preludium and Fugue,” by B.J. Franssen, Dimitri Shostakovich’s “The Second Waltz” and “Carillon Preludes on Appalachian White Spirituals,” by Ronald Barnes.

Other performers in the series include Lee Cobb, of Clearwater, Fla., on July 28; Jeff Davis, University Carillonneur at the University of California-Berkeley, on Aug. 11; and Salt Lake City carillonneur Joey Brink on Aug. 25. All concerts begin at 7 p.m.

Patrons attending the Carillon Summer Concert Series are encouraged to bring blankets or lawn chairs and a picnic dinner. The Ritchie Center is just west of University Boulevard between Asbury and Buchtel and is adjacent to the University of Denver RTD light rail station.  Limited complimentary parking is available on Buchtel in the metered lot in front of the Ritchie Center.
