12th Annual Diversity Summit at the University of Denver

DENVER, May 3, 2013 – The University of Denver and the Center for Multicultural Excellence (CME) will present the 12th Annual Diversity Summit on Inclusive Excellence on May 9-11, 2013.

This year’s Diversity Summit has expanded to a three day format, with the final day reserved for a day of community service – called a Day of Action — where dozens of student, faculty and staff volunteers will host nearly 400 Munroe Elementary School students and their parents on the University campus. This day is dedicated to helping low-income families better understand the process of preparing for college. The majority of Munroe students will be the first in their family to attend college.

The theme of this year’s Summit is Championing Equity to inspire Change. The theme was chosen to provide the structure to focus on the challenges of equity in higher education, as well as broader issues including housing, healthcare and the job market.

On Thursday evening, to kick off the summit, there will be a keynote address by Dr. Pedro Noguera, the Peter L. Agnew Professor of Education at New York University. He will focus on the topic of access to education. On Friday morning Barbara Kelley, the executive director of the Colorado Department of Regulatory Agencies will address summit attendees. Kelley will be speaking about equity of access and how it is impacted by the economic and legal systems in place in urban environments.
