Start fresh for Valentine’s Day with a Couples Retreat Feb. 20 and 21

DENVER – University of Denver (DU) researchers have found that couples who are happiest after five years of marriage are those who have had the highest levels of positive interaction over time.

“That seems obvious,” says Howard Markman, professor of psychology at DU and the author of Fighting For Your Marriage. “But what it means is that couples who are going along and thinking everything is fine because things seem more positive than negative are kidding themselves. Just having a good enough relationship, is NOT good enough.”

Markman says people need to make time and actually need to learn skills for restoring and keeping alive fun, friendship and passion.

“People want passion and I’m here to tell them that we have found that it is possible,” he says.

Markman is hosting a Couple’s Retreat Feb. 20 and 21 at the Magnolia Hotel in Denver. Couples will be treated to a weekend full of activities that will guide them to become better communicators, conflict managers, partners, lovers and friends. The workshop costs $1299 per couple plus the cost of the hotel room.

Markman says Valentine’s Day is the time when society pushes romantic relationships to be a priority. But, if a mate only does special things for their partner at times when it’s socially imposed, then it’s not perceived as an act of love at all.

“The best surprise is when it’s unexpected,” Markman says. “Get away from family and day-to-day pressures and reconnect with the person you love the most!”
