Background

Nader Hashemi is currently Assistant professor of Middle East and Islamic Politics at the Josef Korbel School of International Studies.  He has taught at the UCLA International Institute, Northwestern University, Harvard University, the University of Toronto, and the University of Waterloo.  Hashemi is author of the book “Islam, Secularism, and Liberal Democracy” (Oxford University Press 2009), in which he challenges the widely held belief among social scientists that religious politics and liberal-democratic development are structurally incompatible. While there are certainly tensions between religion and democracy, the two are not irreconcilable.
