Alumna explores life through art

Julia Rymer's “Wave Painting I,” acrylic and graphite on paper on canvas, 9" x 9", 2006.

Julia Rymer embodies her belief that artists need to experiment with subject matter, techniques and influences beyond art itself.

Her first exhibition at CORE New Art Space, “Spectra,” Jan. 26–Feb. 11, features paintings and drawings that Rymer (BFA ’00) says are inspired by a variety of sources, including Greek myths, scientific imagery and natural forms.

“These elements are brought together as references and are abstracted so that the viewer can have an emotional and intuitive response to the work, one that is less tied to the rational or literal,” says Rymer in her artist statement.

Her works include paintings in acrylic, egg tempera and mixed media on wood panel and paper. The exhibit can be viewed Thursdays, Saturdays and Sundays from noon to 6 p.m. and Fridays from noon to 9 p.m. at CORE, 900 Santa Fe Dr. in Denver.

Rymer teaches art courses at Metro State College of Denver.
