Bernadette Calafell, an associate professor in DU’s Department of Human Communication, has received a national award for her research.
Her book, Latina/o Communication Studies: Theorizing Performance, (Academic Books, 2008) was recognized by the National Communication Association with the 2009 Lilla A. Heston Award for outstanding research in oral interpretation and performance.
The book was recognized at the association’s annual conference in Chicago last month.
The book looks at Latina/o cultures in the United States through interviews and autobiography grounded in everyday situations, as well as offers critical analysis of popular culture.
“I am very excited and honored to receive this award because it signals that work by and about Latinas and Latinos is finally being recognized as central to the field of communication studies, and more specifically performance studies,” Calafell says.
The Lilla A. Heston Award recognizes association members who have published research and creative scholarship in interpretation and performance studies.
