Susan Meyer's The Enterprise will be on display at the Myhren Gallery starting Sept. 27.
Piles of plastic figurines, dozens of wood plates and even toothpicks will be turned into art when the University of Denver’s faculty display their work at theMyhren Gallery beginning Sept. 27.
Myhren Gallery Director Dan Jacobs asked DU faculty members to share their most exciting work.
“We want the wider community to see who we are as a group,” Jacobs says.
The exhibit will feature sculpture, painting, drawing, installation, electronic performance, photography, ceramics and print-making.
The exhibit, with the theme of “Beauty,” will feature recent and current works of nearly 30 DU faculty and adjunct faculty members.
“I think each of them will be seen as entities that embrace the context of beauty,” says DU Professor Lawrence Argent.
Argent will submit works in both photography and sculpture.
The photographs he selected were taken during a recent trip to Quanzhou City, China, where he toured toy manufacturing plants.
In two large photos in the exhibit, Argent plays with the focal length on his camera to make something familiar soften its relationship with reality. Gallery visitors can see if they recognize the Victorian figurines.
Adjunct Professor Susan Meyer is working on a series of installations inspired by the landscape painter Thomas Cole.
“I wanted to do a more contemporary but similar series,” Meyer says.
Meyer will install the second piece in the series titled The Enterprise, 2006. The large work includes three landscape areas, two that hang from the ceiling. Nearly hidden in the vast landscape are tiny human figurines.
“The little figures populate the landscape, like populating a communal environment, except when you examine it closer, they seem at odds with one another,” Meyer says.
An opening reception will take place Sept. 27, 5–8p.m. The exhibit runs through Nov. 18.
