This fall, DU’s Victoria H. Myhren Gallery will showcase some of the diverse ways that artists manipulate ideas of reality in its Negotiating Reality: Recent Works from the Logan Collection exhibit.
Organized by Art and Art History students, the exhibit will feature 19 world-class works created since 2000. Gallery Director Dan Jacobs says the works convey a sense of a world in which the individual stands at the intersection of society, nature, technology and popular culture.
Negotiating Reality is the third exhibition of works collected by Vicki and Kent Logan to be organized by the Myhren Gallery. Working with Jacobs, students spent last winter quarter reviewing available artwork, presenting and debating exhibition themes, writing essays for the catalog, and preparing interpretive materials for the exhibition.
“The unique thing about this project is that it allows students to work with a world-class collection and even gives them a chance to publish short essays,” Jacobs says. “There are occasional student-curated exhibitions at university-based museums, but they are extremely rare in this part of the country.”
The exhibit and its fully illustrated catalog were made possible by DU’s Marsico Initiative, which supports experiential learning for undergraduate education.
The Myhren Gallery, located at 2121 E. Asbury Ave, is open from noon to 4 p.m. daily. The exhibit will run Sept. 7–Nov 14, and a public reception for the student curators will be held on Thursday, Sept. 14 from 5–8 p.m. For more information, visit www.du.edu/art/galleries.
