Newman Center Presents series expands with two new shows

The Whiffenpoofs

Yale’s Whiffenpoofs perform Jan. 29 at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts.

DU’s Newman Center for the Performing Arts has added two concerts to its Newman Center Presents series since the original lineup was officially announced last spring.

Venezuelan violinist Eddy Marcano and his Trio Acustico perform Nov. 13 in the Hamilton Recital Hall. The concert will mix traditional Venezuelan folk music with jazz improvisation and classical technique. DU’s own Ricardo Iznaola, director of the conservatory program and chair of the guitar and harp department at the Lamont School of Music, will join the ensemble as a special guest. Iznaola recently released an album of Venezuelan guitar music.

Things turn vocal on Jan. 29 when Yale University’s Whiffenpoofs take the stage in Gates Hall. The country’s oldest collegiate a cappella group, the Whiffenpoofs perform voice-only renditions of everything from jazz standards to pop classics to the Yale fight song.

Steve Seifert, executive director of the Newman Center, says he hopes to book a DU a cappella group to open the Jan. 29 show.
