Three ethnically diverse friends created a show aimed at reclaiming and redefining the racial slurs that had been used to oppress them. The funny, thought-provoking result is N*gger, Wetb*ck, Ch*nk or N*W*C the Race Show, to be showcased in the Newman Center’s Gates Concert Hall at 7:30 p.m. on Oct. 18.
Blending elements of theater, hip hop, slam poetry and stand-up comedy with true-life stories and their own original style, the show’s creators say it’s about “the only race that matters,” the human race. N*W*C the Race Show has been compared to the early work of Culture Clash and Chris Rock.
Some language in the performance may not be suitable for children under 12.
The controversial show is part of the Newman Center Presents series and comes to DU in collaboration with El Centro Su Teatro. The project is supported by the National Performance Network, Western States Arts Federation and the National Endowment for the Arts.
Prior to the show, there will be a free Behind the Curtain lecture at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for the performance are $15–$30.
