DU Advancement office announces new leadership

Scott Lumpkin, Kristine Cecil, and Michael McCall to lead Ascend: The Campaign for the University of Denver

DENVER—The University of Denver’s Office of University Advancement is pleased to announce several recent senior leadership appointments.

Among other responsibilities, the new leadership team, headed by Vice Chancellor Scott Lumpkin, will oversee Ascend: The Campaign for the University of Denver, the University’s multi-year fundraising campaign.  The campaign, which is focused on raising student scholarships, supporting additional faculty and research opportunities, and improving campus facilities, will culminate in 2014 when the University celebrates its sesquicentennial.  The campaign, which was announced publicly last fall after a four-year quiet phase, has raised in excess of $286 million to date.

The three appointments include:

Scott R. Lumpkin, Vice Chancellor

Lumpkin was named the Vice Chancellor of University Advancement in February.  In this role he provides senior leadership for the division.

In his 27 years of service to DU, Lumpkin has played a significant role in garnering many of the University’s largest gifts, reflecting his recognized expertise in charitable gift planning and ability to build strong relationships with alumni and friends of the University.  In addition to his current leadership of the University’s Ascend Campaign, he was instrumental in DU’s landmark $273 million campaign that transformed the campus in the 1990s.  He joined University Advancement in 1983 and was named Associate Vice Chancellor in 1992.   He began his career at DU in 1979 as Assistant Dean of Admissions.

Lumpkin is a DU alum and parent, as well.  He holds a Bachelor of Science in Mathematics degree and a Masters in Business Administration degree from the University.  All three of his children call DU home, two of them as alumni and one as a current student.

He is a past board member of the National Committee on Planned Giving (NCPG), now the Partnership for Philanthropic Planning, as well as a founding member and Past President of the Colorado Planned Giving Roundtable.  Lumpkin has directed national research projects focused on planned giving including NCPG’s landmark nationwide demographic survey of donors: Planned Giving in the United States.  He also helped develop NCPG’s Valuation Standards for Planned Gifts its Guidelines for Counting and Reporting Planned Gifts.

Cecil joined DU in June, bringing extensive expertise in organizational leadership and fundraising, including four comprehensive campaigns.  She oversees the University’s core fundraising units, including annual giving, corporate and foundation relations, and gift planning.  She also plays a key role in division-wide strategic planning, and will assist in the creation of a major gift program for parents.  Along with Lumpkin and Mike McCall, Cecil will work with the Chancellor and Board of Trustees to advance the priorities of the University through the ASCEND camapaign.

Cecil most recently served as Vice President for External Relations at Carleton College in Northfield, Minnesota, and had responsibility for development, alumni relations, and communications.  In that position, she successfully led a six-year, $300 million comprehensive campaign.  Cecil also served as Director of Development for the Minneapolis Institute of Arts.  Cecil holds a Bachelor of Arts in Political Science and International Relations from Carleton College.

McCall will join the University in September. He will lead DU’s central team of major gift officers and manage some of the University’s highest levels of prospects.  Also reporting to McCall is the University’s Office of Donor Relations and Stewardship, which is implementing a comprehensive program of lifetime giving societies to recognize and engage some of the University’s largest donors.

Most recently, McCall served as Associate Vice President/Chief Development Officer at California Polytechnic State University in San Luis Obispo, California, where he held various fundraising leadership roles since 1999.  At Cal Poly, he helped lead the university’s first comprehensive campaign totaling $264 million, the largest campaign effort by any public master’s degree campus in the nation at the time. He also has six years fundraising experience at the University of Colorado Foundation and the Colorado Christian Home/Tennyson Center for Children and Families.

He is a graduate of Old Dominion University and Wake Forest University School of Law. He is a past President of the Central Coast Planned Giving Roundtable.
