This weekend the Lamont Symphony Orchestra will collaborate with the Phoenix Youth Symphony, an organization internationally recognized as one of the premiere youth orchestras in the United States, for a concert of epic proportions.

The Phoenix Youth Symphony will open the concert with Tchaikovsky’s Sleeping Beauty Suite, under the direction of Keitaro Harada. Harada currently is the principal guest conductor for the Sierra Vista Symphony Orchestra, assistant conductor for Arizona Opera, and music director for Phoenix Youth Symphony. He is increasingly recognized as a conducting luminary of the next generation.

“The Lamont Symphony Orchestra is very pleased to be partnering with the talented students of the Phoenix Youth Symphony for this epic event,” says Lawrence Golan, music director and conductor of the LSO. “With the two orchestras combined, there will be more than 150 people on stage performing one of the greatest, most romantic symphonic compositions ever written: Also sprach Zarathustra, by Richard Strauss. For those who may not recognize the piece by name, the opening measures of it were used in Stanley Kubrick’s famous film 2001, A Space Odyssey.”

Golan will conduct the combined orchestras.

The concert is at 3 p.m. Jan. 15 in Gates Concert Hall at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. Admission is free, but tickets are required. Complimentary tickets are available in person at the Newman Center box office. Tickets may be reserved online or over the phone for a small service charge at www.newmantix.com or by calling 303-871-7720. Parking is free at the Newman Center parking garage.
