The Playground Ensemble, artist-in-residence at DU’s Lamont School of Music, pays tribute to Polish composer Henryk Górecki in a concert on Feb. 15. The Playground is a group of professional musicians and composers dedicated to presenting classical music as a living art form. Through its varied outreach programs, the Playground aims to show people that classical music is not a museum piece. This concert is the latest in a series of performances devoted to a single composer. Past concerts have featured such composers as Ligeti, Crumb, Adams, Bolcom, Carter and Messiaen.
“When Henryk Górecki died in November 2010, the Playground’s programming committee began planning a concert to celebrate his life and music,” says Richard von Foerster, founding member and programming director of the ensemble. “Several of Górecki’s works had long been favorites of ours. It is with great pleasure that we present this concert to celebrate Górecki’s legacy.”
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. in Hamilton Recital Hall at the Newman Center for the Performing Arts. A reception to meet the performers will follow the concert. Tickets are $21 for adults, $19 for seniors; admission is free for students from any school (with ID) and all DU Pioneer Card holders. Tickets are available in person at the Newman Center Box Of fice, online or by phone at 303-871-7720. Parking is free at the Newman Center parking garage.
