If an atmosphere of change and turnover is a daunting prospect for new coach Jim Montgomery, the former standout at the University of Maine isn’t admitting it.

Former head coach George Gwozdecky is gone. So is the Western Collegiate Hockey Association, the program’s home for six decades, and so are leading scorers Nick Shore and Chris Knowlton and goalie Juho Olkinuora.

“George is a legend, and some people think that is a tough person to replace,” Montgomery says. “But I know what I believe in, and I believe in a process. If you’re consistent with your process, the results will follow. I’ve always believed that.”

While DU is short some of its offensive firepower as it enters the National Collegiate Hockey Conference, senior goalie Sam Brittain remains and should be the anchor of the Pioneers’ defense. As usual, DU will welcome a highly touted freshman class.

In addition, a solid group of forwards that includes Daniel Doremus, Ty Loney and Zac Larraza should keep DU competitive in what promises to be an exciting inaugural season in the NCHC.
