Althaus claims consolation singles title at tennis invite

University of Denver junior Benny Althaus won two matches to claim the consolation singles title in the green flight to highlight final day action for the Pioneers at the Virginia Invite Sept. 16.

Seniors Adam Holmstrom and Niklas Persson won the A-1 doubles consolation flight, while Holmstrom finished second in the blue singles flight. Persson was ousted in the finals of the white flight to complete action for the Pioneers.

Althaus recorded back-to-back wins to claim the green singles flight consolation crown. He defeated Wake Forest’s Jason Morganstern and Longwood’s Brandon Lindsley to up his fall singles mark to 3-1.

Holmstrom (3-1) was defeated by Virginia’s Dominic Inglot but bounced back with Persson to post an 8-4 win over Old Dominion’s Eidy Igarashi and Aleksandr Seleznev in the doubles consolation final.

The Pioneers return to fall action at the ITA All-American on Sept. 29.
