University of Denver alpine skier John Buchar was named the 2008 Colorado Male College Athlete-of-the-Year, the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame announced this week.
Buchar will be honored at the 2009 Colorado Sports Hall of Fame banquet on April 14 at the Denver Marriott City Center Hotel. Additionally, former DU hockey coach Ralph Backstrom will be inducted into the Colorado Sports Hall of Fame during the event.
Buchar, a senior, swept the slalom and giant slalom individual national titles last season, helping the Pioneers win their record 19th NCAA Championship. Buchar was the second DU skier ever to sweep the two events at the championships, following teammate Adam Cole’s accomplishment from 2007.
Buchar won five of 11 races in 2008 and was named the 2007–08 DU Male Athlete of the Year.
