University of Denver sophomore Jamie Stanton earned the highest finish for an American in the men’s Super G at the 2014 Sochi Paralympics on Sunday. Stanton began the day with a bib number of 37 and finished 3.74 seconds behind Austria’s Markus Salcher.
“It is an unbelievable feeling to be representing the United States and the University of Denver at the Paralympics,” Stanton said. “I have so much pride in being able to represent my country doing something I love. Although I may be missing a leg, I feel that I can do anything an able-bodied person can do. It is a true blessing to be able to ski the way I do.”
Stanton is set to compete in four of five alpine events at the Paralympics, with Super Combined, slalom and giant slalom still remaining. The Super Combined will be held Tuesday morning, while slalom is Thursday morning. Giant slalom will be held Saturday morning.
Stanton is the top-ranked American in upright skiing going to the Paralympics and reached the podium three times during the on the Paralympic World Cup circuit in 2013.
