DU’s Haugen to ski in World Cup

DU sophomore Leif Haugen, captain of the ski team and a native of Lommendalen, Norway, will compete at the World Cup skiing events this weekend in Soelden, Austria, for the Norwegian national team.

Haugen has already built an impressive résumé at the University, posting the most successful freshman ski season in DU history and earning team MVP and most valuable freshman awards. Haugen helped the team claim its 20th NCAA National Championship title by finishing second in the giant slalom and third in the slalom — a performance that ultimately earned him first-team All-America honors.

“I could not be more proud Leif’s progress over the past year,” says Andy LeRoy, DU’s head ski coach. “This weekend’s World Cup is only the beginning for Leif as his sights are fixed on competing in the Olympics later this winter and leading DU to our third straight NCAA title.”

Haugen will compete in the men’s giant slalom at the World Cup, which will be broadcast on Universal Sports at www.universalsports.com this Sunday at 10 a.m. MST.
