Former Pioneer Paul Stastny named to 2014 U.S. Olympic hockey team

Paul Stastny, a former University of Denver hockey standout and current member of the Colorado Avalanche,  has been selected as a member of the 2014 United States Olympic Ice Hockey Team.

The announcement was made at Michigan Stadium Wednesday as part of the festivities at the 2014 Bridgestone NHL Winter Classic.

Stastny is one of 25 players on the U.S roster who will compete at the 2014 Olympic Winter Games Feb. 13-23 in Sochi, Russia.

In addition, Stastny is one of 13 returning players to the National Team who were also members of the 2010 U.S. Olympic squad that captured the silver medal in Vancouver.  He also was captain of the 2013 U.S World Championship team that won the bronze medal in Stockholm/Helsinki while posting 15 points over the team’s 10 games.

While at DU, Stastny was a member of the Pioneers’ 2005 NCAA National Championship team and tallied  98 points (36 goals, 62 assists) over his two collegiate seasons. He was honored as a 2005 and 2006 All-America selection.

The United States opens Olympic play on Thursday, Feb. 13, vs. Slovakia in its first of three preliminary round contests. The U.S. will also face Russia (Feb. 15) and Slovenia (Feb. 16) in opening round action.
