Four Pioneers selected in NHL draft

DU's Nick Shore was drafted in the third round of the 2011 NHL draft.

One current and three incoming DU hockey players were selected on day two of the 2011 NHL Entry Draft, held at Xcel Energy Center in St. Paul, Minn. The four DU players were drafted in the second, third, fourth and seventh rounds of the draft.

Incoming freshman Scott Mayfield of St. Louis led the way with his second-round selection (34th overall) by the New York Islanders.

Sophomore Nick Shore of Denver was drafted in the third round (82nd overall) by the Los Angeles Kings.

Incoming freshman Josiah Didier of Littleton, Colo., was selected in the fourth round (97th overall) by the Montreal Canadiens.

Freshman-to-be Zac Larraza of Scottsdale, Ariz., was taken in the seventh round (196th overall) by the Phoenix Coyotes.

Mayfield registered 16 points on 7 goals and 9 assists and 159 penalty minutes for Youngstown of the United States Hockey League in 2010–11. Shore tallied 18 points on 7 goals and 11 assists in 33 games at center for DU last season, while Didier netted 21 points on 8 goals and 13 assists in 58 games at forward for Cedar Rapids of the USHL. Larraza tallied 18 points on 9 goals and 9 assists at forward for the U.S. National Under-18 Team.

DU will have 10 NHL draft picks on its roster in 2011–12 after reaching a program-best 13 in 2009–10. The Pioneers had nine draft picks on the roster in 2010–11.
