University of Denver skier Monica Hübner has been named the National Women’s Alpine Skier of the Year by the United States Collegiate Ski Coaches Association (USCSCA).
Hübner, who came to DU from Garmisch-Partenkrichen, Germany, dazzled in her freshman season for the Pioneers, culminating with a dramatic victory in the women’s slalom at the NCAA Championships in Lake Placid, N.Y., in March.
“This is one of the highest honors a collegiate ski racer can attain,” says Andy LeRoy, head coach of the Denver ski team and president of the USCSCA. “I am so happy for Monica to receive this year’s inaugural award, which is voted on by all college ski coaches across the country. She has put in so much hard work and embodies the true meaning of a student-athlete. I can’t wait to see what she does for her sophomore year.”
Hübner also reached the podium in the giant slalom in Lake Placid with a second-place finish, earning her a pair of All-America honors. She reached the podium in one of her slalom events this season, including three other top finishes along with her NCAA title.
The Rocky Mountain Intercollegiate Ski Association (RMISA) named Hübner its Women’s Alpine MVP and first-team All-RMISA. She was ranked first on the slalom list and sixth on the GS list for NCAA qualifying. She is the third Pioneer in the last five seasons to win the women’s slalom championship and the seventh overall DU skier to win the title. Adding to her amazing season, Hübner also was named to the National Collegiate All-Academic Ski Team, whose members must have a 3.5 grade-point average or better.
