Game of the week: Men’s lacrosse vs. Hobart

The No. 10-ranked University of Denver men’s lacrosse team begins its three-game home stand by welcoming ECAC foe Hobart to Peter Barton Stadium at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Pioneers will look to stay perfect in their series with the Statesmen, as DU holds a 3–0 record all-time record against Hobart.

The Crimson and Gold have competed against the Statesmen twice at home; at the last matchup, on April 3, 2010, Denver defeated Hobart 17–13. After taking the head coaching reins in 2009, Bill Tierney has an unblemished record against Hobart and will look to bring his team above .500 in conference play with a win Saturday.

Led by senior attackmen Mark Matthews and Alex Demopoulos, the Pioneers are sixth in the nation in points per game (20.5) and seventh in scoring offense (12.5). Matthews leads the Pioneers with 32 points on 21 goals and 11 assists. The Tewaaraton Award nominee is on a 37-game goal-scoring streak, ranking him second in the nation. Matthews is also on a 37-game point-scoring streak that ranks him tied for sixth in the nation. Junior Eric Law is second on the team with 25 points, while Demopoulos has recorded 23 points.

After tallying one assist this past weekend against Air Force, Demopoulos extended his point-scoring streak to 43 straight games, ranking him second in the nation. Demopoulos has scored 75 goals and recorded 66 assists during the streak. Demopoulos is seventh among active assist makers. Denver has outscored its opponents 100–66 through four games so far and holds a 164–98 advantage in points.
