Gymnastics selected to compete in regional championship

The 2008 National Collegiate Women’s Gymnastics Championships regional selections were announced March 31 by the NCAA, and the 13th-ranked University of Denver gymnastics team will make its 10th-consecutive appearance on Saturday, April 12 at the Northeast Region Championships in University Park, Pa.

The Pioneers (16–4) will be one of six teams to compete in the regional hosted by Penn State University. Other teams competing in the meet will be top-ranked and three-time defending national champion Georgia, No. 12 Auburn, No. 22 Penn State, Brigham Young and Iowa State. The competition begins at 4 p.m. MDT.

The top two teams and the top two all-around competitors (who are not on an advancing team) from each regional will receive an automatic berth to the NCAA National Championships in Athens, Ga., April 24–26, hosted by the University of Georgia.

In addition, the event winners at the regional championships will advance to the national championships (in that event only) if they are not part of a qualifying team or the all-around qualifiers.

Denver qualified for its second NCAA Championships in last season’s North Central Regional held in Magness Arena. The Pioneers finished ranked No. 10 in the nation, an all-time Division I best.
