Hockey team opens postseason play Thursday in Omaha

After losing to the Miami (Ohio) RedHawks in their regular-season finale Saturday night at Magness Arena, the University of Denver Pioneers will open the 2014 National Collegiate Hockey Conference (NCHC) playoffs Thursday night at No. 3 seed Omaha in the opening game of the best-of-three series at CenturyLink Arena. Puck drop for Thursday’s contest is 6:37 p.m. MDT.

The Pioneers controlled their own fate to host the opening round of the inaugural playoffs due to a 4-1 loss by Minnesota Duluth against Omaha earlier Saturday.

Denver will open the postseason on the road for the first time since 2002–03 campaign, when it traveled to North Dakota for the opening round of the conference playoffs. The Pioneers enter this season’s conference playoffs as the No. 6 seed.

“I just want to say how proud I am of our senior class,” DU head coach Jim Montgomery said on Saturday. “[Miami’s] first line tonight is dangerous, and they played like it in the third period.”

All of the Pioneers’ postseason games will be broadcast live on Denver’s 102.3 FM ESPN Radio.
