Mason family endows scholarships in gymnastics and women’s basketball

Art and Polly Mason have gifted $200,000 for endowed scholarships in gymnastics and women’s basketball.

“We thank Art and Polly for such a wonderful gift to the University,” says Athletics and Recreation Director Peg Bradley-Doppes. “Athletic endowments provide the gift of opportunity for generations of DU student-athletes, and we’re thrilled by the Mason family’s continued commitment to our athletic sport programs.”

Art Mason was dean of the University of Denver business school from 1966–74. The school is now known as the Daniels College of Business. He remained on faculty until 1987, when he retired after 21 years of service. He was DU’s first unofficial academic advisor to student-athletes that were business majors.

Established in 1986, the Dr. Art Mason Award for Pioneers hockey honors DU’s top scholar-athlete.

The Masons are season ticket holders for hockey, women’s basketball and gymnastics.

The $200,000 gift is the largest gift for DU women’s athletics in school history, second only to the Moore family’s gift to men and women’s golf. Ron Moore, who was a member of DU’s Board of Trustees, helped reinstate the golf program at Denver after a long hiatus.
