The seven-time NCAA champion DU hockey team will open its 2009-10 season by hosting 2009 NCAA Frozen Four participant Vermont during the 60th anniversary celebration of its program on Oct. 9-10, two-time National Coach of the Year George Gwozdecky announced today.
DU will play 11 games against 2009 NCAA Tournament participants and four games each against NCAA heavyweights North Dakota, Minnesota and Colorado College.
“We are looking forward to another highly competitive schedule in 2009-10,” Gwozdecky said. “Vermont will present a big challenge to start the season during the most anticipated reunion in the history of our program. We play six of our first 10 games on the road, including tough series at Ohio State and Minnesota, before hosting North Dakota and St. Cloud State in November. We will certainly be challenged at home and away from Magness Arena this season.”
DU finished second in the WCHA last season and participated in its 20th NCAA Tournament with a 23-12-5 record. Among the 21 returning players are Rhett Rakhshani of Huntington Beach, Calif.; Tyler Ruegsegger of Lakewood, Colo.; Marc Cheverie of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia; Patrick Wiercioch of Maple Ridge, British Columbia; and Joe Colborne of Calgary, Alberta.
