Pioneers chosen in professional soccer drafts

DU soccer stand-outs Kris Banghart and Taryn Hemmings recently were chosen in their 2010 professional soccer drafts.

During his time as a Pioneer, defenseman Banghart served as senior co-captain. He was part of the Pioneers’ first Mountain Pacific Sports Federation championship and their first NCAA tournament appearance in 2008.

Banghart, of Fort Collins, Colo., was the 64th pick in this year’s Major League Soccer SuperDraft. He was chosen by Real Salt Lake, winner of the 2009 MLS Cup championship. He graduates in June with a communications degree.

Hemmings was the 65th overall pick in the Women’s Professional Soccer draft and was chosen by the Boston Breakers.

Hemmings, of Greeley, Colo., played forward with the Pioneers and was twice named Sun Belt Conference player of the year. She graduated in 2008 with a bachelor’s degree in business administration.
