Pioneers volleyball to play for ‘Dig for the Cure’

When the Pioneers volleyball team plays Oct. 17 and 18, they’ll be playing for more than a win. The team will play at DU’s Hamilton Arena, facing Western Kentucky Oct. 17 at 7 p.m. and Middle Tennessee Oct. 18 at 6 p.m. Their matches will benefit the James Graham Brown Cancer Society.

The team became involved in this effort after hearing that a close friend of the Western Kentucky volleyball coaching staff is being treated at the James Graham Brown Cancer Center in Louisville, Ky. Donations from the weekend’s effort will go to the center to support cancer research and treatment.

Players will sell pink Denver athletic T-shirts for $10 during matches. Leading up to the matches, they’ll take pledgesfor $1 for each dig that is recorded throughout the weekend’s action.

The games will be special for other reasons, too. Pioneers will host Fan Appreciation Night during their match against Western Kentucky, and they’ll host the annual Girl Scouts match during the competition with Middle Tennessee. All Colorado Girl Scout troops are invited to the match as well as a pre-match clinic with the team from 3–4 p.m.
