Varsity successes earn sixth Directors’ Cup for DU

The University of Denver has claimed the Learfield Sports Division I AAA Directors’ Cup for the sixth time in seven years, finishing ahead of all non-football schools in the 2013–14 standings.

The University placed a record-high 43rd among all AAA schools, breaking the previous record of 47th set in 2008. Thirteen of DU’s 16 programs earned NCAA postseason berths in 2013–14.

“We are so fortunate to have student-athletes, coaches and staff who embrace the value of broad-based athletic success and strive to finish among the nation’s best,” says Peg Bradley-Doppes, DU’s vice chancellor for athletics, recreation and Ritchie Center operations. “Our goal every year is to field competitive teams in the 17 sport programs we offer at the University of Denver, but this year was exceptional when considering the number of conference championships won by our teams. However, while consistently winning the Directors’ Cup for our category says a lot about our athletic skill, the knowledge that our young men and women push each other to be equally as talented in the classroom is a true measure of our success.”

The teams that contributed to Denver’s Director’s Cup victory were men’s and women’s soccer, skiing (men’s and women’s are counted together), gymnastics, hockey, men’s and women’s swimming, men’s and women’s lacrosse, men’s and women’s tennis, and men’s and women’s golf.
