Wells Fargo Denver Cup showcases top college hockey teams

The University of Denver welcomes another first-class field to the 18th annual Wells Fargo Denver Cup at Magness Arena on Jan. 1–2.

Boston College, Nebraska-Omaha and St. Lawrence are set to join second-ranked Denver in the holiday tournament.

A showcase format will match the Pioneers against Nebraska-Omaha on Jan. 1 at 7:37 p.m. and 2008 NCAA champion Boston College on Jan. 2 at 7:07 p.m.

St. Lawrence will play Boston College on Jan. 1 at 4:37 p.m. and Nebraska-Omaha on Jan. 2 at 4:07 p.m.

The Pioneers are 11-5-2 overall and first in the Western Collegiate Hockey Association with a 9-3-2 mark. DU has been led by junior goaltender Marc Cheverie of Cole Harbour, Nova Scotia, and senior forwards Rhett Rakhshani of Huntington Beach, Calif., and Tyler Ruegsegger of Lakewood, Colo. Cheverie has posted a 9-2-1 record with a 2.13 goals against average and league-leading .928 saves percentage. Rakhshani and Ruegsegger lead DU with 21and 20 points, respectively.

DU head coach George Gwozdecky won his 500th career game earlier this season and has led DU to 11 Denver Cup titles.

Nebraska-Omaha will join the WCHA along with Bemidji State in 2010–11. Nebraska-Omaha is led by head coach Dean Blais, who coached North Dakota to NCAA titles in 1997 and 2000. Boston College returns to Denver for the first time since capturing the 2008 NCAA national championship at Pepsi Center. St. Lawrence head coach Joe Marsh has posted 444 wins in 25 seasons.
